What’s In Mouthwash

If you use common household names to rinse your mouth out in between brushing, you may be causing yourself more harm than good.

Go ahead and search online for the ingredients of any products you use inside or on your body including mouthwash, toothpaste, beauty products, lotions…etc.

Here is a list of chemicals found in some of the most sold mouthwash brands found at your supermarket (Sourced from HolisticDentistry.news):


Artificial dyes

Benzalkonium chloride

Cetylpyridinium chloride



Methyl salicylate



Natural Solutions

Many of these substances including alcohol disrupt the natural bacteria in your mouth that’s needed for proper health of your gums and teeth.

Low levels of good bacteria in your mouth contribute to things like bad breath and dry mouth.

Test it yourself by not using it for a couple of days and see how your mouth feels.

Do you really need to use mouthwash?

Are there natural solutions or alternatives?

No, you don’t really need mouthwash but I know that it feels like you’re helping others around you by re-freshening your breath after a meal.

It’s possible to start making some minor changes such as switching to a natural mouthwash found at your local health food or vitamin store.

Read the ingredients and see if it makes sense to put essentials oils or toxic chemicals in your mouth.

Small Changes

It may seem difficult to make changes like these because we’ve become used to a certain routine but we are human and like any other species on the planet, we are adaptable.

The less we demand chemicals at our grocery store, the less they become available and the safer our planet is.  Just take a moment to think about this.  Feel free to leave a comment for me so we may discuss this or private message me on Facebook.

Until then, see below for my homemade mouthwash recipe that I make for myself and my husband on a regular basis.  I enjoy sharing it with you.  I have tweaked my recipe a bit over the years and you may want to do the same for yourself.

For example, some people may not be able to tolerate a lot of tea tree oil so start off slow.  I’m used to it so I would normally use more than what is listed below.  The same can be said for peppermint oil.  Again, tweak to your liking.

I purchased all of the following items at my local health food/vitamin store.

Cynthia Moon’s Homemade Mouthwash Recipe


1 Glass Jar (16-24 oz.)

2 1/2 – 3 cups Purified Water

1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt

8 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract

4 – 8 drops pure Tea Tree Oil

2 drops doTerra Peppermint Oil

Optional for toothaches: 2 drops Clove Oil

(WARNING: Do NOT ingest clove oil.  Be sure to spit it out.)


Shake vigorously and enjoy!  Please note that you may also want to shake this solution a bit before each use.
